Canadian Government Claims Chinese Espionage in Telco Breaches
The Canadian government and FBI have reported that Canadian telecommunications companies were targeted in hacking attacks attributed to the China-backed hacking group "Salt Typhoon".
At least one unnamed Canadian telecom was breached in mid-February 2025, where hackers manipulated Cisco routers to enable surveillance on the company's network. Investigations suggest Salt Typhoon's targeting extends beyond just the telecom sector as part of a broader espionage campaign to collect intelligence. Salt Typhoon has previously targeted U.S. telecom and internet providers, as well as data center hosts, as China is believed to be preparing for a potential invasion of Taiwan by 2027.
The joint Canadian-FBI advisory warns that Salt Typhoon will "almost certainly" continue targeting Canadian organizations over the next two years.
